First Run In The Books

Well it may have only been a couple months since my last run but it felt nearly like a couple of years! Typically I get the ole concrete feet but today it was just a stiff but semi promising run. Since I'm not a distance runner by nature, a 3 mile entry run is not on my list of happy things to do.

I really wanted to be pissed at my run and with myself for having such a shi#&y run but I wasn't. My loan goal was just to make it without stopping. I started at a slow pace and I sure as hell ended on one. I've run before and I'll be running again so understanding exactly where I sit on even my own scale is pretty low. I at least have a sense of my performance in which to guage. I've run high six minute miles and I've run about what I did today. 3 miles at 12:35 minute miles. Now I won't even discount myself for stopping to wait for traffic. I was slow and I know it. I was at mall power walking pace and I was still pretty damn proud just to be back out there.

With all that said I was ready to get the damn thing started no matter how big a procrastinator I am. I'm currently trying a new running app from Nike and my wife will be using Run Tracker. I don't know that I have a preference but I do really like the Nike interface.

I don't wear Nike shoes though. I do believe in being fitted and researching the shoes I buy. Through all my years running, my best shoes have always been Asics. They are my personal favorite and they make a great performing and fitting neutral shoe for my gigantasaurus-Rex sized feet but its whatever when it comes to the shoes other people buy, I only care about what goes on my feet. Find a great place to buy a pair of running shoes and make your salesperson work for it because they should be there to trully find a shoe that works for you.

The Army didn't know a damn thing about my feet and I was just lucky I had actually been running in a very good pair of shoes before I got there. Coincidentally they sold at the PX.

Anyway, this post got long and I just wanna get some sleep. Time to rest, hydrate and eat. I need to remember those because that's something else I should constantly cover.

Today's mental state? Pretty Good
Physical state? A little tired for such a short run. Keep stretching and rollin'. I'm gonna need it.

It has BEGUN!...well, sort of.

It really is that time and I've already looked through the week's running schedule. It's only a three day run week but mostly 3 mile runs. Which right now seem like an infinite distance. As of right now though, the only thing I've done is the slow mental preparation for the torture that will soon commence.

I don't have any lifting scheduled right now because the gym in the garage doesn't exist yet and it's a whole other mess of things in its own right. It will though and I'll be able to fill in the details as soon as I figure them out myself.

That said, it's time to get my ass off the couch and start taking things seriously. I'll get on that as soon as I get my ass away from all the leftovers in my fridge apparently. You know, all the ones you need to get rid of to start eating better. The ones you can't waste because you have them and its wasteful and they are so damn tasty! Those are the ones.

But this post isn't about diets though because I'm trying to get mine on track. I've taken a day one weigh in and now I just need to get an average. I did this really just to see where my base line is currently. No wonder I didn't bring sexy back this year.

Until next time.

Time to beat my meat!

You dirty perverts, I was talking about my muscles! It's nearing time to start the marathon training and I tend to have the least stretchy muscle I know of. Tight calves, ham strings, glutes oh my!

Yeah, much like kobe beef, you gotta get those muscles soft. I should know since my calves are tight little bastards and tend to cramp, clench and ball up at will. I wanna cry sometimes but that's for pansies. No..scratch that. If you need to cry then cry it out. I will probably want to ball like a baby when I start running into the ten mile plus range.

Seriously though if you are not foam rolling and working on mobility you should be. I need to take my own damn advice. You may notice that a lot here. I will seem contradictory, conflicted, even confused.  It's my journey though and I'm going to expose my faults and downfalls.

Foam rolling is aggravating and many times very intense. But it's a necessary evil. There isn't anything difficult about the idea, just grab a roller and start light and work your way into more intense work. A good place to start is by grabbing a yoga mat and laying out the roller such that your palms will rest more comfortably on the mat and your calves and hamstrings can rest on the roller. With small incraments of movement back and fourth. To increase pressure, use the same movements with each leg individually. To get the shins and quads use a similar technique using a plank position.

Don't kill yourself and take it easy when rolling. Aside from positions being a little difficult to hold, you can become a bit compromised under intense rolling. Like anthing else, start light and work your way in. There are a lot of resources on line to get directions on rolling and I advise doing your due dilligence  and find out what works best for you. There are about a hundred or more types of rollers. Later I will try to get a couple more than the standard roller I have and give reviews of those as well. For now, I use a standard roller that you can get at just about any sports isle anywhere.

I tend to dispise fitness sites where everything seems perfect and you should get results in 10 minutes!! It's the get rich quick scheme for fitness. My wife and I know the journey isn't short nor is it easy but it can be less confusing. I love the Keep It Simple Stupid method for everything in life and I plan to keep that going here.

I'm not perfect and I perform at a level so far from perfect that I need to look at webster's for a proper definition. I'll give you everything that I give myself. This is somewhat my personal therapy for getting out the things I have issues with and try to take the steps to be better.

Did you think this was another fitness site? Nope, not really, just some insight from my journey through different challenges leading up to some of my first major goals and beyond. Through my mistakes and triumphs I hope to help others with understanding their goals and challenges. If anything I hope this becomes a hilarious journey through my relationship with fitness and wellness. If that's all my readers get is a laugh, then I've done my job.

So sit back, relax and enjoy the rest of Dropping Plates!

Welcome to Dropping Plates

Hey everyone! You have probably found your way here via myself or by way of a friend. This introductory post will serve for the primer for this blog and I will post it as a permanent fixture as a guideline for what's happening throughout the course of this log.

The quick and dirty. This is my fitness log and weblog for my journey for the next....well, however long. As a point of reference my wife and I are going to be running in the Disney Marathon in January! I had originally wanted to start this as log of my lifts and slowly I had the idea to incorporate everything. Everything from eating, stretching, lifting, running etc.

On that note this isn't my how to, it's my log. I will be relaying my successes and my failures. What works for me and what doesn't. With all of this I will try to make things fun and enjoyable. This is supposed to be an exercise in building my fitness levels as well as helping others along the way.

I'm not sure how everything will go but for now I just want everyone to stay tuned for the first series of posts as I get in gear to start my marathon training, build my home gym over the years and try to eat my way into some positive muscle growth.

It sounds mundane but I'll try not to make things boring. There is a lot to come and I hope everyone has fun reading my journey while they explore their own fitness goals. I will also need reader feedback as I would love to constantly evolve the log and make things user friendly so I'll want your suggestions!
